all 抽象名詞=very 形容詞

• He is very very very gentle and soft to her.他對(duì)她很溫柔。
• He is all gentleness to her.他對(duì)她很溫柔。

抽象名詞 itself=very 形容詞

• He is very/extremely modest towards his elders.對(duì)待長(zhǎng)輩，他極度謙虛。
• To his superiors, he is humility itself.對(duì)待長(zhǎng)輩，他極度謙虛。

注意：這原是表示某種性質(zhì)到了極點(diǎn)的一種說法，有“非常，只管，一味，盡”之意，有時(shí)甚至可以譯為“...的化身”，“...的具體化”。

表示程度時(shí)，特別是表達(dá)“略有，少許，全無，毫無”意思時(shí)，用something of，nothing of, much of, little of

• He is something of a philosopher.他略有哲學(xué)家的風(fēng)范。
• She is nothing of a musician.他全然不像個(gè)音樂家。
• He is very much of a poet.他很有詩人氣派。
• She is little of a scholar.她無學(xué)者風(fēng)度。

注意：something of與something like有比較大的不同點(diǎn)。something like表示數(shù)量或性質(zhì)上略同，如It shaped something like a cigar.(指形狀略似雪茄。)

翻譯時(shí)的問題：

如，He has seen something of life.不宜翻譯為“他看過了一些人生?！睋Q做“他略具閱歷。”更好。

又如，He is something of a scholar.“他宛如學(xué)者?！辈蝗纭八跃邔W(xué)識(shí)。”

寫比喻句，用“名詞 of a 名詞

• It was a great mountain of a wave.那是一個(gè)像山一樣高的大浪。
• That fool of a Tom did it.這是湯姆那個(gè)笨蛋做的。
• She was an angel of a wife.她是天仙一般的妻子。
• He was a fine figure of a young man.他是一個(gè)風(fēng)度翩翩的公子。
• The child is a treasure of a son.那是一個(gè)寶貝兒子。
• He lives in a palace of a house.他住在一座宮殿似的大屋子。

表達(dá)“像...那樣的”，用“名詞 of sbs 名詞’”

• It was beyond expectation for a man of your taste.遇到一位像你這樣有品味的人，真是出乎意料。
• He is a man of your experience.他是一個(gè)像你一樣經(jīng)驗(yàn)豐富的人。
• You are a lady of her wisdom.你是一個(gè)像她那樣賢惠的淑女。

用名詞替代形容詞，用of 抽象名詞

• It was of great importance.(of importance=important)
• of no use=useless 無用
• a man of courage=a courageous man 勇敢的人
• a lady of virtue=a virtuous lady 賢德的女人
• a man of business 商人
• a man of few words 寡言的人
• a man of his word 言行一致
• a man of parts 多才多藝

強(qiáng)烈限定的時(shí)候，用“that 先行詞 關(guān)系代詞”

• He lost that picture which he had got with much trouble.他把費(fèi)了很大勁才得來的畫丟了。
• The root is that part of vegetable which least impresses the eye.根是植物最不引人注目的部分。
• Those rich men are great who do not think themselves great because they are rich.并不以為他們有錢的人在算偉大。

one thing...another ;the one...the other

• Saying is one thing,doing another.說的是一回事，做的是另一回事。
• It is one thing to know and another to teach.知道是一回事，教是另一回事。
• They have two daughters;one is a singer,the other an actress.他們有兩個(gè)女兒，一個(gè)是歌手，另一個(gè)是演員。
• It is one thing to own a library;it is another to use it wisely.(藏書是一回事，能否善于利用又是另一回事。)

注意：another和the other后是不需要再寫一遍謂語。
