(1)兩者都可表示“畫” ：draw主要指用鉛筆、鋼筆、粉筆、炭精等畫圖、畫畫或畫線(側(cè)重線條) ；paint 指用顏料繪畫，如水彩畫、油畫等畫畫(側(cè)重著色)。如：

He drew a circle (line).他畫了一個(gè)圈(一條線)。

He paints in oils ( water-colors).他畫油畫(水彩畫)。

比較： draw a picture 與 paint a picture 含義不同，前者主要指用線條畫成的“圖”，后者則主要指用顏料繪成的“畫”。

(2)兩者都可用于引申義，表示“描寫”、“描述”等。如：

Shakespeare drew his characters very well.莎士比亞擅長人物描寫。

In her letter,she painted a fascinating picture of her life in London.她在信中生動(dòng)地描述了她在倫敦的生活。

兩者均可表示“分開”： divide 通常指把整體分為若干部分,其后常接介詞 into;而 separate 通常指把原來連在一起或靠近的東西分隔開來，其后常接介詞from。如：

The world is divided into seven continents.世界被分成七大洲。

Divide the money among the six of you.這筆錢你們六個(gè)人分。

The food was divided among the poor.食物都分給了窮人。

兩者都可表示“發(fā)現(xiàn)”，有時(shí)可換用( discover 更正式)。如：

I discovered [found] an unopened letter in the drawer.我在抽屜里發(fā)現(xiàn)有一封未啟開的信。

He discovered [found] the whole story was a lie.他發(fā)現(xiàn)整個(gè)故事是一個(gè)謊言。

He discovered [found] her sitting near the fire.他發(fā)現(xiàn)她坐在爐火邊。

She discovered [found] that he was excited.她發(fā)現(xiàn)他很激動(dòng)。

但是，若要表示第一次發(fā)現(xiàn)以前沒有人知道的東西、地方、事實(shí)等，則用 discover 。如：

Columbus discovered the New World.哥倫布發(fā)現(xiàn)了新大陸。

Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming.盤尼西林是亞歷山大·弗來明發(fā)現(xiàn)的。

Modern astronomers have discovered 100 million such galaxies.現(xiàn)代天文學(xué)家發(fā)現(xiàn)了一億個(gè)這樣的星系
