Laba Congee 臘八粥

Little children, little children, dont be greedy, soon after Laba is the new year party.

小孩兒小孩兒你別饞，過了臘八就是年。

How many days do we eat Laba congee?

臘八粥，喝幾天？

Eat it until Day Twenty-three.

Mother: Todays Laba Festival – lets have some Laba congee for dinner.

媽媽：今天是臘八節，咱們晚飯喝點臘八粥。

Child: What is Laba Festival, and what is Laba Congee?

寶寶：什么是臘八節，什么又是臘八粥??？

Mother: The Laba Festival is celebrated on the eighth day of the 12th month of the lunar calendar.

媽媽：臘八節是農歷臘月八日過的。

In North China, it is considered the start of celebrations for the Chinese New Year.

在我國北方，它被認為是春節慶?；顒拥拈_始。

"La" in Chinese means the 12th lunar month, and "ba", as you know, means eight.

“臘”在中文里指農歷的第12個月，然后“ba”你知道的，是八的意思。

As for Laba congee, youll know what it is when we have it.

至于臘八粥，一會兒喝的時候你就知道了。

Child: I cant wait.

寶寶：我已經等不及了。

（Dinner Time 晚飯時）

Mother: Its time to eat.

媽媽：開飯了。

This is Laba congee.

這個就是臘八粥。

Child: It smells delicious.

寶寶：聞起來好香啊。

What do we have in it?

里面都有什么啊？

Mother: It contains rice, millet, barley, red beans, peanuts, chestnuts, lotus seeds, longans, and red dates.

媽媽：里面有大米、小米、薏米、紅豆、花生、栗子、蓮子、桂圓和紅棗。

Child: Wow, so many ingredients.

寶寶：哇，好多原料啊。

Mother: Yes, Laba congee is also called Eight-treasure congee.

媽媽：是的，臘八粥又叫八寶粥。

It means that apart from rice, it also contains eight or more kinds of grains, beans, nuts and dried fruits.

意思就是除了大米以外，里面還有八種或者以上的谷物、豆子、堅果和干水果。

Child: Can we add pistachios?

寶寶：咱們能加開心果嗎？

Mother: Yeah, that will be creative.

媽媽：可以啊，還挺有創意的。

Some other traditional ingredients include walnuts, pine nuts, corn, mung beans, black beans, and kidney beans.

其他的傳統原料還包括核桃、松子、玉米、綠豆、黑豆和蕓豆。

Child: I see.

寶寶：明白了。

Wow, its so yummy.

哇，真好吃。

I love eating the chestnuts in it.

When you eat the red dates, dont swallow the pit.

Mom, I ate something bitter.

Mother: Of course.
